Description
WE BOUGHT A FANTASTIC MATCHED PAIR OF ENFIELD, CT SHAKER COMMUNITY BOXES THAT HELD LACE AND EDGINGS THAT WERE USED IN THE STORE LOCATED AT THE ENFIELD, CT COMMUNITY IN THE 19TH CENTURY.
THESE RARE BOXES WERE USED TO HOLD "QUILLING LACE" AND "EDGINGS AND INSERTINGS".
BOTH ARE IDENTICAL IN SIZE (NEARLY IDENTICAL TO THE SHAKER SEED BOXES) AND BOTH STILL RETAIN THEIR ORIGINAL YELLOW AND OCHER GRAIN PAINT TO RESEMBLE TIGER MAPLE.
BOTH HAS HAND PAINTED LABELS ON THE LIDS WHICH AT FIRST LOOK LIKE PAPER LABELS BUT ARE HAND PAINTED.
Both boxes have applied edge moldings on the top and delicate tee-headed nails throughout and both are identical in size and wood.
ALTHOUGH THESE ARE A MATCHED PAIR WE WILL BE SELLING THEM INDIVIDUALLY.
BOTH BOXES WERE BOUGHT IN THE 1960'S FROM SHAKER ED THOMPSON. SHAKER ED, AS HE WAS KNOWN AROUND THE CONNECTICUT AREA WAS AN OLD PICKER. HE WORKED AT THE ENFIELD, CT SHAKER VILLAGE WHEN IT CLOSED IN THE EARLY 1920'S AS A CARETAKER. HE TRADED HIS WORK FOR THE PIECES THAT WERE LEFT IN THE BUILDINGS WHEN THE LAST SHAKERS MOVED UP TO MAINE AND THE BUILDINGS AND LAND WERE SOLD.
THE ORIGINAL COLLECTOR KEPT THESE UNTIL ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO WHEN THEY WERE SOLD TO OTHERS.
WE WILL SHOW THE TWO BOXES TOGETHER IN SOME OF THE PHOTOS BUT REMEMBER, EACH AUCTION IS FOR ONE BOX ONLY.
WE WILL COMBINE SHIPPING ON THE PIECES IF YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL ON BUYING BOTH.
