Distributed By Leeds Pottery OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 1944-1954 VERY GOOD CONDITION!
LEEDS POTTERY was a Distributor of Disney licensed pottery pieces from 1944 through 1954. Many collectors are surprised to hear that LEEDS POTTERY did not actually manufacture these pieces. The Chicago based LEEDS POTTERY contracted with multiple pottery manufacturers so as to obtain the best prices, quantity and production time lines to deliver these wonderful Walt Disney Productions ceramic pieces to Flower Shops and Gift Shops across the country.
Planters, Vases and Pitchers with flower arrangements were basic LEEDS POTTERY products. LEEDS also distributed the famous Disney Character “Turnabout” Cookie Jars. Their Disney product line also included Character Banks, Lamps and Salt & Pepper Shakers. Earlier pieces were painted overglaze, and the paint frequently flaked off. Later pieces were airbrushed with lighter pastel colors under glaze. These remain in excellent condition. Since the lighter pastel colors under glaze were created in fewer numbers and are more rare.
This Leeds Pottery Dopey Large ceramic planter is in very good condition for its age. Seldom can a Leeds Pottery figure be considered to be in very good condition simply because of the original purpose of these wonderful pieces. They were generally gifts given to young children to decorate their room. The potential of damage to these pieces were therefore, very high!
This fantastic piece stands 6 1/4” tall. This Dopey Planter is painted in beautiful shades of soft Blue, Pink and Brown Pastel Colors. The bottom is incised “DOPEY © WALT DISNEY.” There are no chips, cracks or breaks. It shows no fading of paint and Dopey’s facial expression is crisp. The interior of the tree stump planter is clean with no blemishes. There is very little visible crazing which is normal for pieces of this age. Dopey seems to be the favorite of the Seven Dwarfs for LEEDS since we have yet to see any of the other six.
This Dopey Tree Stump Ceramic Planter dates back to around 1946 to 1950 which makes it close to being 70 Years Old!
