    Description

You're bidding on an antique, Civil War period hand colored engraved small print - total size 11 1/2" X 10 1/4" in frame - "Entrance of the Fifty Fifth Massachusetts (Colored) Regiment into Charleston, Feb. 21 1865". Note no publisher info on the print, but it's modeled after a painting by famed illustrator, Thomas Nast, held in the collection of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.
Following the Emancipation Proclamation, there was such an enthusiastic rush of free men of color and escaped slaves to Boston to join the famed Mass 54th Regiment that the state immediately began raising the 55th. The 55th would go on to serve alongside the 54th in several engagements in South Carolina. The print depicts the Regiment marching through the burned out remains of Charleston, surrounded by the celebrating black population of the city.
I've seen other examples of this print, but this is the first hand-colored example I've seen - visible print is clean and appealing. Framed under glass in more contemporary, but suitable framing - frame does appear to have some bumps/scrapes to the finish, but style of frame is a kind of distressed, so it doesn't really call itself out.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
