You are bidding on an original vintage item from WW2:
British MKIII Steel Helmet
Often referred to as the "Turtle Shell" helmet.
This is a genuine item as originally manufactured and supplied to the theatre of WW2 in 1944.
Introduced in 1944, the MKIII was first conceived in 1941 but war demands made production of a new helmet impossible. The MKIII was mainly used by Canadian troops at first and made its debut in combat during the D-Day landings. Only some 500,000 MKIII helmets were produced before the helmet was upgraded to the MKIV.
The helmet features a single screw and nut that hold in the liner from the dome of the helmet. It also features higher D-rings for the chinstrap (unlike the lower D-ring in the MKIV). This is noticeable from the outside of the helmet.
The following is stamped on the black suspension supports (very worn and hard to read- please see the photos):
7, FFL, II, 1944.
It has a camouflaged color shade of dark and bright green colors. Comes complete with the original chinstrap.
Condition:
The helmet is in fair / semi-good condition, showing age & usage.
Outside
:
The steel shell is still intact and solid.
Oxidation & rust specks on 40% of the original green paint but they are not deep and could easily be polished and repainted. No major dents.
Inside
: padding & liner are in very poor shape
with wear and tear; the chinstrap is intact and still operational but with tears.
Some rust on the inside but nothing major.
These flaws only add to its character and are expected in a vintage piece.
This would be a great item for actual use at reenactments or living history events and will
complete your
WW2 field gear collection.
No reserve.
I don't consider myself an expert on all my findings, but I do try my best to describe them the best I can. That's why I ask that you ask questions first before bidding if you aren't sure
about this item! I will be happy to send any additional photo’s.
