Description
American Civil War Broadside entitled "Southern Prisoners' Relief Fund". A very rare piece of Civil War ephemera with only 3 copies located worldwide by OCLC/Worldcat (Library of Virginia, UC Santa Barbara, and Duke University Library). Printed at "The Albion" Office, Liverpool, England, 1864. The broadside was published in England seeking relief for the suffering of the Confederate prisoners in forts and camps of the Northern States. The broadside reads: "There are at this time many thousands of Confederate prisoners of war confined in the various forts and camps of the Northern States. A large proportion of them are wounded or sick, and all are in a state of destitution...the Southern Prisoners' Relief Fund is intended to mitigate some of these sufferings...it is earnestly hoped that all Southerners residing in Europe will support the fund..." Additionally, the Committee members are listed at the top of the broadside, beginning with Christopher Atkinson, (Charleston, S.C.,) Chairman. The broadside is printed on very thin paper and measures 11¼" x 8¾" (28.5 x 22.3 cm). It is in near fine condition with faint wear at the corners. A rare and historically important item soliciting contributions from Southerners residing in Europe during the Civil War.Please view the many other rare collectibles available for purchase at our store.
