    Description

This is an Other Ranks' feather bonnet for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders circa 1940s - 1950s. A key feature of this bonnet is the vintage cut feather conical white hackle that had vanished by the 1960s (to be replaced sadly by the thinner unaesthetic tubular hackle). It has four foxtails; by this time the Argyll standard changed to four tails for ORs and five tails for WOs and officers. (Even through the 1950s small detachments paraded in full dress for special occasions such as tattoos.) The band around the bonnet is of red and white dicing, proper for the Argylls. The band is adjustable in circumference with a buckle fixture in the back.  There was a long ago repair to this fixing (see photo) that is entirely hidden from view. A white metal A&SH badge is affixed. The white hackle is secured at the top by a string that attaches onto a hook ring on the bonnet itself (see photo). The chin strap is entirely intact. Feathers are in excellent shape with no molting.  All in all, this bonnet is in very good condition.
