New old stock. All 12 cards and envelopes are there. The cards and original box are in excellent condition. Each card has a bit of history of each hex sign. The IRISH MEX, the SIXTEEN POINTED ROSETTE, the GOOD LUCK, the LOVE, ROMANCE AND MARRIAGE SIGN, the VILKUM DISTLEFINK SIGN and the MIGHTY OAK. Jacob and Jane Zook are known for creating handmade Hex signs and selling them at their store along US Route 30E from 1942-2009. J. Ott (Johnny Ott) is the artist known as the Professor of Hexology. He’d work on his handmade Hex signs by night and sleep by day. This is a very cool unique item! Cards measure approx: 4.75” x 5.5”.
More about HEX signs: About 300 years ago, groups of religious refugees from the Rhine region of Germany, found their way to Southeastern Pennsylvania. Most were farmers who sought the religious freedom offered on land owned by William Penn. The refugees, known as the Pennsylvania Dutch, who were mostly Amish, Mennonites Lutherans and Reformed, brought along with them their custom of decorating their barns with large, colorful geometric patterns. Their Dutch folk art had many meanings or “legends” and the colorful symbols that told their stories of birth, marriage, love, weather and a variety of the topics were based on both its aesthetics and meanings.
